For those interested in hemp in the Tokyo/Yokohama area,
there is a Hemp fair which began on July 10th.
It is taking place at Natural and Harmonic Plant's
http://www.nh-plants.com/news/entry.php?eid=00242
until August 10. It is a great chance to
see some beautiful works by Japanese artists.
I have on display (until the end of July) hand-woven O-kuso fabric,
te-umi ito (hand joined thread) and other items. I've added a new item to sell - a business card case (meishi-ire) which emphasizes heart
connections and quality craftsmanship. Of course, you can use the
case for many other things as well - use your imagination!
Enjoy the show!

Fostering relationships
- making connections: business card case -

There was a time, not long ago, when looms in Japanese cotton mills (orimoto) made some of the finest fabrics in the world. Many people
don' t realize that most of these mills have disappeared and with them, the which clothed a nation before jobs went overseas. Each Orimoto had its own signature cloth, a fingerprint left by the looms and hands which made it. Chica's Mesihi ire are made of carefully selected fabric swatches from mills of yesteryear and the few still in use today.

The swatch patchwork are hand sewn, connected to one another and detailed with golden hand made hemp thread. Hemp has a tradition in japan to enhance go-en and foster relationships between people. The hemp is from a farm specializing in sustainably growing hemp for
8 generations. The thread is meticulously crafted by separating fibers from the seima and connecting the fibers through the O-umi process. From farmers to nobility, Shinto priests, Buddhist monks and scholars, hemp was an integral part of the lives of
all Japanese throughout history.

The fastener is a hand-crafted Keyaki (zelkova) button from the core
of a fallen branch found at the foot of an ancient tree in the mountains of Gunma. The button embodies strength and secures the case and
contents with a wrap from the hemp cord. Keyaki are known as
spirit trees in Japan.

Symbolizing the spirit of all things handmade in Japan's past and
present, this Meishi-ire reminds us of the importance of all relationships and our connection to, as well as the
preservation of, craft and tradition.
